 La Grâce du Tombeur

Synopsis

The Grace of Falling

A solo based on the myth of Icarus and danced in a 4 by 4 metre sand pit by Thierry Smits himself.  The piece is divided into three parts, namely, ‘The labyrinth’, which is composed mainly of repeated falls and floor work performed to highly rhythmic music and ending with a drum solo; ‘Flight’, where the choreography focuses on arm position, jumps, and balancing rendered perillous by the unstable ground and danced to a sort of ‘backwards fugue’ that makes great use of brass instruments; and ‘The Fall’ – a more or less mystical circular choreography in which the dancer throws sand around himself and ends the dance in a ‘perpetual’ spin.
