Esther Ferrer
Esther Ferrer (San Sebastián, 1937 (ES) – lives in París (FR) is known for her work as a visual artist as well as for her performances, both alone and as part of the Spanish group ZAJ. Her work has always been more oriented towards art/action, an ephemeral practice, than towards art/production.
In Spain at the beginning of the 1960s, together with the painter José Antonio Sistiaga, she founded the first Workshop of Free Expression. From the 1970s onwards, she devoted part of her activity to visual arts: reworked photographs, installations, paintings based on the series of prime numbers, objects…
She has exhibited in Spain and international galleries and fairs such as FIAC and ARCO. During her career as a performer, she has participated in festivals in Europe as well as in Canada, Japan, Thailand, Korea, Cuba, Mexico… and in the USA.
She is also the author of two radio pieces for Radio National de España and has given seminars on performance art in Universities and Schools of Fine Arts.
Esther Ferrer represented Spain at the Venice Biennale in 1999, received the National Prize of Bellas Artes in 2008, the Gure Artea Prize of the Basque Government in 2012, the MAV Prize (Mujeres en las artes visuales), the Marie Claire Prize for contemporary art and the Velazquez Prize in 2014.
